How do you save money?

Postby CowAdmin on November 23rd, 2007, 11:08 am

How do you save money? Or, if you have debt, do you even try to save money at this point?

One of the ways I've been saving money is with a coin jar. Every coin I get, I put in a jar. Once a month, I take that money to the bank and have it deposited directly into my savings acount - which I do not touch! It is slow, but at least my savings is growing.

I pay myself first. When I get a check, I take 5% off the top and put that amount into a savings account. If I don't put money in savings right away, I end up spending it. I find that if I save it right away, I don't even miss it.

I used to have a coin jar when I was a kid. Now what I do is just I simply control myself from buying unnecessary things. Usually it's just a self discipline for me. Sometimes I even skip a meal if I really need to save for something. :)

I would have a seperate bank account for me. This bank saving account is purposely for my saving purpose. I will put a portion of my monthly salary into this private saving account. :P

Online banking is a popular option these days, though make sure the bank is FDIC insured, or if the bank goes belly up your money and savings could be gone.

In order to save money, aside from making a budget for myself, I tend to put expensive items I plan to buy on hold. And then I carefully research where I can find that item for the cheapest price, whether it's on or offline. Then I take the next step and buy it. That way I can still get it, but I save a few $. If you just go ahead and buy it, you don't save as much $, and that money saved can be used to buy other things. I also check the weekly specials to see if there's anything on sale that I might need or might need within the near future.

I am thinking of opening a bank account soon. I really think it is a nice way of saving money since I'll be lazy enough to go to the bank or ATM to withdraw some. :D

As ManilaGurL said, a bank is also a good way to save money. You put all that spare cash that you have left there. And after a while it will pile up, and so will the interest (hopefully) and when you need to make a big purchase you can use that money. Or in a case of an emergency you can rely on that money.

I take a certain amount of every pay check that I get and put it into my investing account. This is my that I do not take out and I am investing in the stock market. Then at the end of the month if I have any extra money I put that into my investing account.
